What is new in Employment Law?

Increase in tribunal awards – 1st February 2012

For dismissals taking effect on or after 1st February 2012 the maximum unfair dismissal compensatory award will increase from £68,400 to £72,300. The maximum limit of a ‘week’s pay’ for the purpose of calculating various other awards, including the basic award for unfair dismissal, will increase from £400 to £430.

New statutory payment rates – April 2012

Rates of statutory benefits that will apply from early April 2012 will have increased as follows:-

• Statutory maternity/paternity/adoption pay from £128.73 to £135.45 (the weekly earnings threshold for these payments will rise from £102 to £107.

• Statutory sick pay from £81.50 to £85.85 (the weekly earnings threshold will rise from £102 to £107).

• Statutory maternity allowance from £124.88 to £135.45 (weekly earnings threshold to remain at £30).

Pensions automatic-enrolment – October 2012

All employers in Great Britain will soon be required to automatically enrol eligible jobholders into a pension scheme. Larger employers will be affected by the new law before smaller employers and new businesses, with the initial wave of employers being able to voluntarily start auto-enrolment as early as July 2012.
